5 dining and drinking events this week

Staying in is overrated. Here are five picks for dining and drinking events in the city this week.

Tuesday, Aug. 15
Meauxbar (942 N. Rampart St., 504-569-9979) serves a dinner inspired by Julia Child, the legendary chef and television personality, on her birthday. Expect a repertoire of Child’s favorite dishes and most popular recipes (five courses for $60), including a classic French vichyssoise with chives and olive oil, and of course, a classic rendition of beef Bourgogne, with mushrooms, lardons and pearl onions. Also tonight, the No Menu Tuesdays series at Coquette (2800 Magazine St., 504-265-0421) continues, with dishes featuring sweet corn and guest chefs (and Coutelier NOLA owners) Jacqueline Blanchard and Brandt Cox. For reservations, call the restaurant.

Wednesday, Aug. 16
Wayward Owl Brewing Company (3940 Thalia St., (504) 827-1646) releases original small batch casks of their beer every Wednesday. This week, Colombian pop-up La Monita will be on site serving Colombian-inspired treats starting at 4:30 p.m. like crispy-fried bolitas de yucca filled with mozzarella cheese and served with chimichurri, and passion fruit pork and jalapeno arepas.

Friday, Aug. 18
Part of the pop-up poolside parties series at the new Drifter Hotel (3522 Tulane Ave., 504-605-4644) in Mid-City, Z’kaya, a Japanese-inspired izakaya concept from chef Jamielyn Arcega (formerly of CellarDoor) will feature dishes such as musubi, a house-made spam served with ginger ponzu, meatball yakitori with cured egg yolk and tare, and “nori doritos,” served with a cool ranch togarashi and “edamole” dip, among others. Food is available from 3 p.m. until they run out. No reservations, but an entrance fee to the pool is required.

Saturday, Aug. 19
Taqueria and Mexican restaurant La Casita (8400 Oak St., 504-826-9913) is hosting this year’s after party for the Krewe of Oak’s 31st Mid-Summer Mardi Gras. Following the parade’s march from Oak Street to Palmer Park (which begins at 6:45 p.m.) the restaurant will host DJ Soul Sister at 10 p.m., and offers food and drink specials, including a traditional trompo (spit) stationed outside the restaurant where meat will be roasted for tacos al pastor.
