In September, the New Orleans literary scene picks up again after a traditional summer lull. There are readings, book release parties and reader's conventions throughout the month; here are a few highlights and picks.

Sept. 9-Oct. 21: One Book One New Orleans. YLC's literacy campaign hosts six literary events throughout the fall inspired by poet Clint Smith's book Counting Descent. There's a prison book drive at a brewery, panel discussion, slam poetry night and more. Visit the group's Facebook page for details.

Sept. 14: Benjamin Morris. The Southern poet collaborated with artist Myrtle von Damitz III for Ecotone, their new collection of poems and illustrations inspired by the coastal Louisiana landscape. A launch party for the book is at Antenna Gallery at 7 p.m.

Sept. 15: Las Lunas Locas. Members of the California writing collective read at an event celebrating women writers. Local poets and writers also read. There's a small suggested donation ($5) to attend. At 8 p.m. at Bar Redux.

Sept. 21: Nisi Shawl. The author of acclaimed alternate-history novel Everfair — the Los Angeles Review of Books said it "soars toward a feminist, Afrofuturist vision" — visits Dogfish Reading Series. Poet Shaina Monet also reads, and an open mic follows. At 7:30 p.m. at 2448 N. Villere St.

Sept. 24: Happy Birthday, Mr. Faulkner. This slightly-posh-seeming function is a benefit for Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society. There are readings from Faulkner, Anne Gisleson reads from her much-buzzed-about memoir The Futilitarians and there's music, food and drinks. Email faulkhouse@aol.com to get a ticket; they start at $75 for people under age 40. At 3:30 p.m. at and around Faulkner House.

Sept. 25-26: A Louder Literature: T.S. Eliot. Two nights of readings celebrate the "Waste Land" author's 129th birthday. There are readings from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and other poems. The festivities are at Latter Library at 6:30 p.m.
