Four dining and drinking events Nov. 16-19

There's lots to eat and drink over the next couple of days. Here are four dining and drinking events happening around town Thursday and into the weekend.

Thursday, Nov. 16
Broadmoor’s Propeller (4035 Washington Ave.), a local nonprofit that helps support and promote social initiatives, is hosting more than 10 new pop-up restaurants at its annual Propeller Pop event. Held at the incubator’s headquarters, the event features a VIP hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with appetizers by Sylvain’s Martha Wiggins. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., drinks and dishes from some of the city’s rising pop-up restaurants will be served, and there will be massage chairs, a pop-up glitter bar and screenings of documentary shorts from the New Orleans Film Festival.

Participating pop-ups at the event include Alma, Da’Serigne, La Monita, Hole Mole, Z’Kaya, Gattone Grasso!, Gonzo Smokehouse & BBQ, The Taylored Chef, Chef Sully, 2nd Chance Donuts, and TooPops. Drinks are provided by Propeller’s neighbors, Roulaison Distilling Co. and Broad Street Cider & Ale.

Tickets to the event are $100 for VIP passes and $35 in advance for regular admission, which includes all food and drink from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. 

Saturday, Nov. 18
Plenty of stuff is happening for hog fans this weekend, starting at 8 a.m. with Central City BBQ’s (1201 S. Rampart St.) Whole Hog Feast, a two-day celebration built around the Cajun boucherie tradition.

Also on Saturday, a wild hog cook-off will be hosted by the St. Bernard Parish Coastal Division in Violet beginning at 11 a.m. The event is aimed at bringing attention to local coastal restoration efforts and proceeds will go to the St. Bernard Wetlands Foundation.

The event is highlighted by a wild boar cooking competition and demonstrations by Nathan Richard of Cavan and Robert Vasquez of Briquette. Judging the competition are Richard, barbecue pitmaster and NASA rocket scientist Howard Conyers, and Louisiana Eats’ Poppy Tooker. There will be a live stream of the LSU vs. Tennessee game and live music. Tickets are $8 online and $10 at the door, and can be purchased here.

Saturday & Sunday

The annual Treme Creole Gumbo Festival celebrating everything gumbo takes over Louis Armstrong Park on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. A host of arts and craft booths and musical entertainment will be joined by 14 local food vendors doing their spin on the local dish, including gumbo z’herbes, shrimp and oyster, chicken and andouille, Creole file, dark roux and also a gluten-free and vegan version.

New this year is a ‘Gumbosium’ panel discussion led by local chefs talking everything gumbo. Panelists include Frank Brigtsen, Linda Green, Susan Spicer, Celestine Dunbar, Michael Gulotta, Ericka Lassir, and more.
