During the holidays, many Italians and Italian Americans celebrate the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes.

Typically held on Christmas Eve, the Southern Italian feast — also known as La Viglia — features seven types of seafood. Here are three restaurants in New Orleans offering their take on the tradition.

At Josephine Estelle (600 Carondelet St., 504-930-3070) in the Ace Hotel, an all-star cast of chefs prepares a multi-course meal Dec. 12. Chefs include Peche’s Ryan Prewitt, Steven Stryjewski of Cochon, Coquette’s Michael Stoltzfus and Kristen Essig, Nina Compton of Compere Lapin, Seaworthy’s Dan Causgrove and the Josephine Estelle crew of Andy Ticer, Michael Hudman, Chris Borges, Breanne Kostyk and Justin Koslowsky. Tickets for the dinner are $125 per person and include cocktails, dinner, wine pairings and dessert. Cocktails start at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 7 p.m.

Some of the proceeds will benefit the Gulf Restoration Network, a local non-profit that works to reduce pollution in Gulf waterways and preserve the wetlands. For reservations, call the restaurant at (504) 930-3070 .

French Quarter seafood institution GW Fins (800 Bienville St., 504-581-3467) has been throwing annual Feast of the Seven Fishes dinners for the better part of the past decade. This year, sous chef Tim Lane is preparing two dinners — Dec. 6-7 — to celebrate the feast. As usual, Gulf seafood will be featured and many dishes will be served family style. Dishes include a braciole of sole with pine nuts, raisins and hard-boiled egg in arrabiata sauce, zuppe fume, acini di pepe, tuna meatballs and coconut macadamia arancini with black cherry mascarpone ice cream.

Tickets for the seven course dinner are $95 and include wine pairings. The Dec. 7 dinner is sold out, but tickets remain for the Dec. 6 dinner. To make reservations, call the restaurant at (504) 581-3467.

Chef Nick Lama’s Uptown Italian restaurant Avo (5908 Magazine St., 504-509-6550) is once again throwing a month-long celebration. A $70 five-course, seven-fish menu is available Dec. 11 through Dec. 30. An wine pairing option can be added. For reservations, visit the restaurant's website.
