Books roundup: Five literary events in New Orleans in February

Posted By on Wed, Feb 7, 2018 at 1:22 PM

We know, we know — it's not exactly the right time for this post. But as Carnival madness ratchets up to 11 with big night parades Wednesday evening, recall that there will be a time when you return to your regular life, or at least whatever passes for regular life in New Orleans.

Assuming that life includes good books, here are some literary events to check out this month.
  • Feb. 7: Karen Celestan and Eric Waters. The author and photographer appear at a release party for Freedom's Dance, a new book about second lines and social aid and pleasure clubs in New Orleans.  It begins at Community Book Center at 5:30 p.m.

  • Feb. 14: Letters READ: Text Dating. This unconventional reading at Antenna is a Valentine's Day exploration of contemporary texts — specifically, text message exchanges from relationships and internet dating. Adam Newman emcees at 7 p.m.

  • Feb. 20: George Saunders. It's hard to overstate the hype around the release of Saunders' first novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, which was the follow-up to his beloved short story collections including Pastoralia and Tenth of December. He talks about the book at a reading hosted by Garden District Book Shop at The New Orleans Advocate's offices at 7 p.m. (You need a ticket to attend.)

  • Feb. 22: Zachary Lazar. The author presents Vengeance, his novel about a writer who meets a prisoner serving a life sentence at Angola. A performance group of women who were members of the drama club at the women's prison in St. Gabriel join the discussion. It's at Cafe Istanbul at 7 p.m.

  • Feb. 23: Pop-Up Magazine. This stage show styles itself as a "live magazine." Contributors include journalists, photographers and novelists, who share stories that are shaped for live storytelling and paired with a live score. The show begins at the Civic Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
