  • Mayor Mitch Landrieu, right, shows 60 Minutes' Anderson Cooper where two of the Confederate statues are being stored.

As he prepares to go on tour with his new book In the Shadow of Statues (reviewed here), Mayor Mitch Landrieu will appear on 60 Minutes Sunday night to discuss the removal of four Confederate-era monuments:
"Really what these monuments were, were a lie," says Landrieu. One of the statues removed was of Gen. P.G.T Beauregard, who ordered the first shots fired in the Civil War, another was a bronze figure of Confederate hero Gen. Robert E. Lee that stood for 133 years. "Robert E. Lee was used as an example to send a message to the rest of the country, and to all the people that lived here, that the Confederacy was a noble cause. And that's just not true."
During the segment, Landrieu shows host Anderson Cooper the secret site where two of the monuments are being stored; 60 Minutes, which agreed not to disclose the location, refers to it as a "shed."

Yesterday Landrieu announced some plans for the sites where the monuments once stood, including the installation of an American flag on the spot where the Jefferson Davis statue stood in Mid-City, and "beautification work" at the sites of the P.G.T. Beauregard and Robert E. Lee statues. Ultimate decisions about Lee Circle, Landrieu said, will be left to Mayor-elect LaToya Cantrell's administration.

This morning the pro-monument group Save Our Circle blasted Landrieu in a press release, calling Landrieu "delusional." In a statement, the group's George Peterson wrote, "I say that we leave the blighted public property as it is as a reminder to the atrocity that Mitch Landrieu perpetrated as he used the monument issue as a deflection from his failures in our city with the NOPD, the violent crime, the failing infrastructure, our streets, the S&WB, the flooding of our city and the way that our economy has been decimated by his many, many failed policies. Either you put back that which you STOLE or leave the sites alone."

60 Minutes will air at 6 p.m. March 11 on WWL-TV.
