Hippie Kitchen (3741 Jefferson Highway, 504-444-4113; www.hknola.com), a health-focused restaurant and cafe, is now open in Old Jefferson.

Harveen Khera and Wayne Greiner opened the restaurant earlier this month in a colorful building on the corner of Hyman Drive and Jefferson Highway. Chef Charlotte Morton, formerly of New York City’s Rouge Tomate, is helming the kitchen. Khera previously developed a similar farm-to-table concept at Tulane University.

According to a press release from the owners, the restaurant is emphasizing local, seasonal and organic ingredients. The menu takes inspiration from 1960s-era counter-culture. There’s a selection of “Peace wraps,” and the word "hippie' is used in several dishes.

Breakfast includes pastries and a full menu of dishes ranging from a burrito filled with turmeric-scrambled eggs, sweet potatoes and caramelized onions to seasonal fruit and a chia seed pudding made with coconut milk and topped with fruit puree.

There are burritos, which also can be ordered as bowls. Options include Creole chicken, brisket and spicy chickpea, all of which come with rice, black beans and avocado (the chickpea version also includes braised greens). Salads include a quinoa medley with black-eyed peas, sweet potatoes, shaved carrots, herbs and avocado crema. Beet salad has pistachios, goat cheese, baby greens and orange vinaigrette.

There’s a grilled Swiss and cheddar sandwich with toasted pecans, caramelized onions, and honey-Creole mustard. A house-cured pastrami sandwich is topped with Swiss cheese, olive salad and Russian dressing.

Drinks include local beers on tap, wine, house-made sangria, coffees, cold-pressed juices, teas and tonics, such as turmeric tonic with ginger, lemon, cayenne and honey. A curious “hot lemon water” is listed at $2.49.

Hippie Kitchen is open 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
