Morrow's opens on St. Claude Avenue

For years, chef Lenora Chong ran the restaurant Lenora’s Grill in Pontchartrain Park. On Friday, she and son Larry Morrow opened the restaurant Morrow’s (2438 St. Claude Ave.) on the corner of Spain Street and St. Claude Avenue.

For Morrow, running a restaurant is a first, but the local event curator, entrepreneur and author has made it his business to bring people together over food and drink, and the move was a natural progression, he says.

“It was the next step. It’s been a journey and it’s been a lot to get to this point,” Morrow said. “But I always wanted to create something fun and welcoming for other people.”

Local carpenter and woodworker Matthew Holdren and Colin Keith designed the space. The polished modern scheme features cypress wood banquettes framing the back end of the room, and the restaurant has a mix of small tables and longer, tall tables throughout.

There is a large bar with an eye-catching dark green grass backdrop where “Morrow of the story,” is spelled out in neon lights, something that Morrow says was inspired by his travels in other cities.

“I’ve visited bars and restaurants in New York and L.A. and I would always see these grass walls, but you don’t see them in New Orleans. I think I had to have one,” Morrow says with a laugh.

The menu combines traditional New Orleans dishes and Korean influences, a nod to Chong’s Korean heritage. That means dishes such as fried oyster po-boys and bibimbap share space on the menu and appetizers range from crabmeat hush puppies and sauteed crab claws to Korean-style lettuce wraps filled with spicy chicken, chive pancakes with soy dipping sauce and sesame-ginger chicken wings. Larger dishes include seafood po-boys, a half-pound sirloin burger with Parmesan fries, pasta jambalaya, fried chicken and a Korean-style grilled rib-eye steak.

Morrow’s also serves brunch 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday with dishes such as Cajun crab cake Benedict and bananas Foster French toast.

The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. to Friday and Saturday.
