The occasion is usually celebrated with the Marzen style lager, a toasty, copper-colored beer with a medium body and mild hoppiness traditionally brewed in March (or Märzen in German) and allowed to age in cold cellars (also known as "lagering") throughout the summer months.

The craft brewing movement has brought about a bounty of innovation and experimentation in the beer world. With new flavor combinations, creative brewing techniques and new varieties of hops, there are many new ways to build flavor.

Dry-hopping is one of the popular current trends. The technique involves adding hops to the beer after the initial boiling process, resulting in additional hop aroma without more of the bitterness typically associated with hops. Many local brewers are dry-hopping multiple times during fermentation, referred to as double or triple dry-hopping, and the results are impressive.

India Pale Ale, or IPA, is the king of the craft beer movement, but it is a continuously  evolving style. The once-popular West Coast-style IPA, known for its bitter and resinous hop character, has been replaced by the New England style: an unfiltered, juicy brew with more floral and citrus character. Other styles, including lower-alcohol session IPA and flavored IPAs, which infuse fruit and spices into the beer, have had their moments as well. No matter which version is trending, though, a big bunch of hops remains the essential ingredient in IPAs.

The August heat may slow things down a bit for the restaurants of New Orleans, but the breweries are still going strong, with special events taking place throughout the summer swelter. That may have something to do with the cold beverages served therein, but that’s no reason to overlook them. Check out some of the cool beer-filled festivities occurring this month.
  • Port Orleans Brewing Company is now offering free tours of their facility on Saturdays and Sundays at noon and 2 p.m. Each tour has a 20 person limit, and is first come, first served only.

  • NOLA Brewing Company releases the latest in its Petit Lot sour series on Friday, August 4th. Passion Pit is a barrel-aged sour ale with passion fruit and naranjilla.

  • Wayward Owl Brewing is joining forces with Bacchanal for a beer lunch Friday, Aug. 4, at the wine bar’s Bywater location. The four course meal begins at 1:30 p.m. for $35 per person.

Courtyard Brewery (1020 Erato St.) has been picking up the pace at its location in the Lower Garden District. The nano-brewery serves a steady rotation of house-brewed beers as well as offerings from other breweries. It's introducing several new beers in coming weeks.

First up is How to Live in Style, originally brewed in conjunction with Modern Times Beer in San Diego, California. This hazy, New England-style IPA is crafted with generous portions of Mosaic, Denali and Amarillo hops. Look for it on tap in the next week or so.
